Become a Social Studies Leader in New York State!

NYSCSS is the statewide professional organization of social studies educators. Our members are committed to ensuring that all students graduate from high school and college ready for lifelong learning, engaging careers, and active civic life. Membership in NYSCSS is open to all who are interested in social studies education as:

  • Teachers
  • Supervisors and Other Administrators
  • Curriculum Developers
  • Researchers and Scholars
  • Cultural Institution Educators
  • Publishers and Content Developers

NYS4A functions autonomously within NYSCSS. Our members share goals with NYSCSS for social studies education in New York State, through leadership responsibilities for social studies curriculum and instructional programs. Membership in NYS4A is open to NYSCSS members who have leadership responsibilities for social studies curriculum development and instructional programs at the pre- kindergarten – grade 12, higher education, and cultural education levels. These leaders may include, but are not limited to:

  • Principals
  • Directors, Chairpersons, Department Heads
  • Curriculum Coordinators
  • Professional Consultants
  • Other Educational Administrators

Membership provides you with:

  • Advocacy at the state and national levels in changes to regulations, policies, curriculum frameworks, and assessments – your voice matters!
  • Professional development tailored to your needs during a time of change and limited resources.
  • Service in the social studies community. You can lead professional development committees, present on instructional practice at conferences and in our journal, and serve on our board.

NYSCSS & NYS4A have strong working relationships with the New York State Education Department (NYSED). Because of you, NYSCSS & NYS4A have been able to participate in the:

  • development of the New York State Learning Standards for Social Studies.
  • creation of the Social Studies Core Curriculum and state assessments at all levels.
  • revision of Social Studies Frameworks in the Common Core era.
  • organization of two Social Studies Summits at NYSED to inform policy changes.

Unlike many other states where federal "No Child Left Behind" legislation has eliminated social studies programs, New York continues to support social studies education, in large part due to the advocacy for social studies through your NYSCSS membership.

Please join or renew now – and be a social studies leader in the 21st century! Membership is for one calendar year, starting the month following when registration is received.
